Toe Nail fungus. Three words that send shivers down your spine when you hear them. We’ve all seen those pictures of fungal toes that have torn nails with excessive redness surrounding the nails.  If you’ve experienced this yourself, you know how challenging it can be to make sure your toes are covered whenever you walk out in public.

Fortunately, there are many products available that can help to get rid of those nasty nails. Products like Blaine Lab’s Tineacide or Blaine Lab’s Terpenicol prevent fungus from breaking through the barrier of protection it provides.

However, the best defense against toenail fungus is a good offense and these top 7 tips to prevent getting it in the first place.

  1. Clip your toenails correctly. Be sure that the nail clippers you’re using are clean. When trimming nails start from the edges and work your way in to prevent in-grown nails. Then be sure to cut them straight across. To make it easier, when cutting toenails, soak your feet in warm water prior to cutting them, which makes the skin around your toe areas softer and easier to trip around.
  2. Wear Breathable Footwear. The more your toes are confined, the more likely that nail fungus is allowed to grow. By circulating the areas around your feet you’re less likely to allow fungus to grow as most fungus thrives in moist environments. Breathable materials such as leather or canvas typically work best.
  3. Wear Properly Fitted Shoes. If you have shoes that when you wiggle your toes and your toenail touch the shoes, that’s a sign that you may need bigger shoes. That prevents you from having excessive pressure on your toes and nails and allows your toes to breathe comfortably.
  4. Switch out Your Shoes. Wearing shoes that are still wet from yesterday’s downpour not only increases the risk of nail fungus growth, but most materials are not as sturdy when wet and may lead to other serious injury. Best to have several pairs of shoes available and allow them to dry in an open area when not being worn.  You can also treat the shoes with Blaine Lab’s Antifungal Shoe Spray which kills 99.9% of fungal bacteria on contact.
  5. Avoid Walking Barefoot In Public Areas. Heading to the shower after a hard workout may seem innocent, but if you do it without some kind of footwear, you’re walking through a potential mine field of foot fungus! Always wear slippers while using public showers or restrooms. Even when on vacation taking a swim in the pool may sound refreshing, but don’t forget to protect your feet the same way you protect your skin.
  6. Disinfect Regularly. Showers and bathrooms can be home to many types of foot fungus just waiting for you to head to bed so they can go to work. Be sure to regularly clean and disinfect with bleach based cleansers or ammonia. Spray shoes with Blaine Lab’s Antifungal Shoe Spray on a regular basis, and most importantly, wash your feet daily, especially between toes and at the base of the nail. Just as important is ensuring that they are thoroughly dried afterwards. Moisture is fungus’ best friend.
  7. Don’t Share Grooming Tools. As clean as your spouse may appear to be, resist the urge to just share toe nail clippers with them. Fungus can easily be transmitted between people through sharing grooming utensils. If you must, take a moment to sterilize them in hot water, or by cleaning them first with alcohol.

While unpleasant and uncomfortable, Nail Fungus can be dealt with through proper care and treatment. For more information on the treatment of Nail Fungus or other preventative tips, visit Vite20.com.
